New bike trail signs depict
wetlands, wildlife and more
SCIO — The Conotton Creek Bike Trail erected numerous signs along the trail after receiving a grant funded by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
Sixteen green, metal signs with white lettering, have been placed throughout the 11.5 miles between Bowerston and Jewett.
The signs depict areas of wetlands, wildlife, rock formations and historic land marks.
At the Jewett staging area, for example, a sign denotes Abraham Lincoln’s historic train ride to his inauguration on the rail line, which continued on to Millers Station where he stopped for breakfast.
Other signs denote a blue heron rookery, the former Scio Pottery, the original L.J. Smith stairway plant in Conotton, the Gen. George Custer staging area, 2 miles away his New Rumley birthplace, Utica’s Fracionation Plant and Dead Tree Swamp.
All 11.5 miles of the trail was repaved in September, and it has five covered bridges over the Conotton Creek.
