Najib to reply to objection over bid to adduce fresh evidence in SRC case – Free Malaysia Today

PETALING JAYA: The defence in Najib Razak’s SRC International case told the Federal Court that it would be filing a reply to the prosecution’s objection over its bid to adduce fresh evidence.
Lawyers Shafee Abdullah and Nur Syafiqah Mohd Sofian said this during a case management today.
They added they would file their affidavit-in-reply by July 14.
Yesterday, the prosecution, in objecting to Najib’s application to adduce fresh evidence, said the involvement of judge Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who previously held a position in Maybank Investment Bank Bhd, was irrelevant to the former prime minister’s trial in the High Court.
The prosecution said Najib’s allegations against Nazlan were a red herring to declare the SRC trial a nullity.
It added that issues of 1MDB’s acquisition of Tanjong Energy Holdings Sdn Bhd and the involvement of Maybank and Nazlan in the 1MDB matter were not relevant to Najib’s SRC International charges.
Deputy public prosecutor Ashrof Adrin Kamarul said further case management would be on July 29.
He added that the Federal Court would give its directions on the application after both the prosecution and defence exhausted their affidavits.
On June 7, Najib filed an application to adduce further evidence related to Nazlan to nullify the entire trial on the misappropriation of SRC funds totalling RM42 million.
The Federal Court is scheduled to hear Najib’s appeal for 10 days from Aug 15 to 26.
Last year, the Court of Appeal affirmed the High Court’s decision in July 2020 to convict Najib on seven charges of power abuse, criminal breach of trust and money laundering over RM42 million belonging to SRC International that entered into his AmBank accounts.
It also upheld Najib’s 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine. However, the former prime minister was released on bail pending his final appeal before the Federal Court.
